Does your marketing spark joy? ✨
If you just stared at your computer screen, sighed, and thought, “Honestly… I’m not even sure what my marketing is doing anymore,” this one’s for you.
Marie Kondo built an entire philosophy around figuring out what deserves to stay and letting go of what doesn’t. And honestly? Real estate marketing could use a little of that energy.
Because sometimes the problem isn’t that you need more marketing. You need less.
Less content you’re creating because you feel like you should. Less chasing every new platform and trend. Less hanging onto strategies that worked three years ago simply because they once worked. And definitely less staring at a Canva folder containing 47 versions of essentially the same graphic.
So grab your imaginary “Does this spark joy?” checklist. It’s time to figure out what’s earning its place in your marketing and what’s just taking up space in your brain.
Does It Actually Spark Joy?
Marie Kondo’s famous question is whether something sparks joy. For your marketing, let’s tweak it slightly: Does it serve a purpose?
That social platform you haven’t touched in six months? Maybe not.
The weekly content you dread creating? Probably not.
The marketing trend everyone else is doing? It might not be for you.
Your marketing doesn’t have to include everything that’s available. It needs to include what makes sense for your business, your clients, and your personality.
Thank It, Then Let It Go
This might be the hardest part. Maybe it’s a template you paid for. A lead magnet you spent hours creating. A platform you convinced yourself you needed. Or a strategy that used to work but hasn’t delivered in ages.
You’re allowed to move on.
Just because you invested time or money into something doesn’t mean you have to keep investing in it forever. That’s not quitting. That’s recognizing when something has run its course.
So thank that old strategy for its service and let it go. Marie would approve.
Stop Keeping Marketing “Just in Case”
“Maybe I’ll start TikTok.”
“I might use this template someday.”
“I should probably start a podcast.”
“Maybe I’ll get back to blogging.”
Sound familiar? Before long, your marketing strategy can start looking less like a strategy and more like the junk drawer everyone is afraid to open. You don’t need to be everywhere. You don’t need to create everything. And you definitely don’t need to chase every shiny new marketing idea that pops up.
More marketing doesn’t automatically mean better marketing. Sometimes the smartest move is deciding what you’re not going to do.
Give Your Content A Job
One of the easiest ways to create marketing anxiety is to make the goal simply: “I need to post something.”
Instead, ask what you want that piece of content to accomplish. Does it build trust? Show your local expertise? Educate buyers and sellers? Keep you connected with past clients? Give people a reason to remember you?
Not every post needs to generate a lead. But your marketing as a whole should have a purpose. Otherwise, you’re just feeding the content machine. And honestly? That thing is hungry.
Keep The Good Stuff
Decluttering doesn’t mean stripping your marketing down until there’s nothing left. Keep the things that make you recognizable.
Your personality. Your sense of humor. Your local knowledge. Your weirdly specific neighborhood facts. Your ability to explain real estate without making people want to fall asleep.
Those aren’t clutter. Those are the things people remember.
The goal isn’t to make your marketing smaller just for the sake of being smaller. It’s to make room for more of what actually works, and more of what actually feels like you.
So… What Stays?
Ideally, the marketing that feels purposeful, manageable, and unmistakably you.
At the end of the day, Marie Kondo’s philosophy isn’t really about having less stuff. It’s about making room for the things that matter. The same goes for your marketing.
You don’t need to do everything. You need to do the right things well; the things that support your business, connect with your audience, and feel like you.
